Small businesses and the council are reassuring Douglas Shire residents there is plenty of food to go around after a rush of panic buying at supermarkets yesterday.

Manager of Malone’s Butchery in Port Douglas, Dillon Vendell, said today its meat is locally sourced so there is no chance of running out this week.

“We’ll definitely be able to feed all of Port Douglas for the foreseeable future, I say bring it on,” Mr Vendell said.

“We’ll have plenty of meat well into the rest of the week.”

Mr Vendell said the store had been doing good trade this week.

“It has picked up a little bit.”

An online post this morning by the Council stated “there’s no need to panic buy but if you do need some extra supplies for the coming days don’t forget your local butchery and bakery”.

It lists Mossman Meat House, Malone’s and Mossman Bakery as good options, but recommends ordering the bread today to pick up tomorrow.

Newsport visited the major supermarkets in the region this morning to see how they were holding up.

The most stocked up was the Port Douglas IGA, while Mossman Woolworths and Port Douglas Coles had shortages of several products.

A Woolworths staff member said a delivery was expected within two days, so there was no need for panic buying.

Woolworths was low or out of several items including eggs, bread, meat, fruit, vegetables and toilet paper.

Coles still had eggs and toilet paper, but had little fruit and veg or meat.

IGA was out of eggs but was well stocked on most other items.
