As Port Douglas Carnivale approaches, Brett "Bretto" Wright and Vanessa Carey from Windswell are gearing up for one of the festival’s most anticipated events, The Tin Shed’s Family Beach Day on Saturday, May 24.

With a lineup of beach activities, a sand sculpting competition, and an impressive kite display, the event promises a day of fun for families and beach lovers alike.

One of the standout features of the day is the Watersport Hub, hosted by Windswell.

Attendees will have the opportunity to experience a range of watersports first-hand, making this a truly immersive beachside experience.

With Carnivale marking the start of the wind-tourism season, Windswell is ready to welcome both new and returning visitors to the waters of Port Douglas.

“We’re looking forward to another amazing beach day, catching the wind, the waves, and showcasing the latest in watersports gear,” Bretto says.

“With the return of good winds, Carnivale signals the start of another incredible season.”

This year’s Watersport Hub will feature all the trusted crowd favourites, plus exciting new activities.

“We’re bringing out our new sailing catamaran (Nacra 36), and for those wanting a futuristic ride, we’ll have the fliteboard (E-Foil) available to try,” Bretto says.

In the lead-up to the big day, the Windswell team has been hard at work.

“Each year, we gather our team, run training drills, board rescues, and test out new equipment to make sure everything is running smoothly,” Bretto says.

“We also spent a day at Low Isles gathering ghost nets off the island and checking in with our favourite locations, especially Four Mile Beach.”

For Bretto the Family Beach Day is all about community, fun, and creating lasting memories.

“Everyone loves building sandcastles and flying kites, right? It’s a great day for kids and parents, with so much to do and see.”

Reflecting on past years, he recalls standout moments, including an epic kitesurf downwinder slalom race from the kite school to the surf club.

“That was awesome! I’d do that again in a heartbeat. Maybe we’ll make it happen.”
