Excitement has been building at the Port Douglas Muddies cricket club this week, with the club’s top two teams set to play in grand finals at Cazalys sports stadium in Cairns on the weekend - providing the weather holds off.

The semi finals of the Far North Cricket association were washed out last weekend but, luckily for the Muddies, their two finals-bound teams finished top of the 2nd Grade competition and second in the 3rd Grade competition, ensuring safe passage to both of their big matches.

The 2nd Grade team is scheduled to face off against Rovers at 1.30pm on Sunday, March 23, while the 3rd Grade side is up against Mulgrave at 1pm on Saturday, March 22.

With rain expected to stick around for most of this week, Far North Cricket president Dan Freebody says there are contingency plans in place if the games are washed out this weekend.

This is the first time Cazalys has hosted cricket grand finals in 20 years.

Other competitions kicking off

In rugby union, the first round of the new season starts for the Port Douglas Reef Raiders this Saturday, March 22, with the team taking on Northern Beaches Mudcrabs at West Barlow Park from 6:15pm.

In rugby league, round one for the Mossman Sharks also takes place on Saturday, from 6pm at home at Coronation Park, with the team taking on Yarrabah Sea Hawks.
