The top two Port Douglas Muddies cricket teams played off in grand finals at Cazaly’s sports stadium in Cairns on the weekend, but everything did not exactly go to plan.

On Saturday, the Muddies 3rd Grade team lost to Mulgrave after winning the toss and choosing to bowl. Mulgrave was dismissed for 121 in 35 overs, with Adam Lucas taking 4/14 from seven overs for Port Douglas.

In reply, the Muddies were all out for 96 in 30.4 overs.

On Sunday, the Port Douglas 2nd Grade team lined up against Rovers, but the game was eventually abandoned due to rain. League officials have scheduled the replay for 11am this Sunday, March 30, at Cazaly’s stadium in Cairns.

If the 1st Grade Grand Final on Saturday is rained out, the 2nd Grade game may be rescheduled again, but if the 2nd Grade match is rained out again, the Muddies will be crowned champions because they finished higher on the table.

Last Sunday, the Muddies won the toss and batted first, scoring 148 in 39 overs. Cameron Adam top scored with 37, while captain Ethan McCullough made 31.

In reply, Rovers were 1/19 after four overs when play was abandoned. Every semi final of the Far North Cricket association was washed out the previous weekend but, luckily for the Muddies, their two finals-bound teams finished top and second.

This is the first time Cazalys has hosted cricket grand finals in 20 years.

Sharks take first bite

The Mossman Sharks kicked off the Far North Queensland Rubgy League season in style on Saturday, defeating Yarrabah Sea Hawks 24-12 at Coronation Park in Mossman.

Try scorers included Davin Crampton, Gordon James and Kalani Anau.

The Sharks take on the Tully Tigers at home this Saturday, March 29, from 6pm.

Tully is coming off a heavy 42-12 loss to the Innisfail Leprechauns on the weekend.

The Sharks Under 19 team also had a good 34-30 win against Yarrabah, but results were not so good for the reserves and the women’s team, who lost 20-18 and 52-4 respectively.

Rugby first round fizzer

The first round of the new season for the Port Douglas Reef Raiders rugby union team scheduled for Saturday, March 22, against the Northern Beaches Mudcrabs at West Barlow Park was postponed due to a rain-affected ground.

The entire round of the Far North Queensland Rugby competition will now be played on Saturday, April 26.

This week, the Reef Raiders are scheduled to play Southside at Port Douglas sports park from 4pm on Saturday, March 29.
