The Port Douglas Local Ambulance Committee is calling for new members, warning that without fresh volunteers, the long-running community group may be forced to suspend operations after years of dedicated service.

The volunteer committee undertakes community activities promoting and assisting Queensland Ambulance Services.

Michelle Vladich, who recently stepped down after 20 years as president, said the committee is in urgent need of support.

“We’ve been a quiet but vital part of the community for years, but we simply can’t continue without more hands,” she said.

Michelle said joining the committee is a meaningful way to give back, without requiring a major time commitment.

“We have a meeting every two months that goes for about an hour and our yearly activities. It’s not a big commitment, but it has a big impact.”

The committee remains active throughout the year, delivering CPR training to Year 5 and 6 students at Port Douglas State School and running a non-profit stall at IGA Port Douglas several times annually, where they sell First Aid and Snake Bite kits.

One of their newest programs, RESQ ROOS, is already making a difference. It teaches children from Kindy to Year 6 how to recognise emergencies and dial 000. Sessions have been delivered at C&K Kindergarten and Port Douglas Primary for Prep to Year 1 students.

All volunteers of the committee receive CPR and first aid training, and those interested can take part in a Rescue Leader course through Queensland Ambulance.

Currently, the committee has about ten active members, many of whom are juggling other responsibilities, including parenting and work.

Without new volunteers, the future of the committee is uncertain.
