A 2m reef shark is trapped in the Four Mile Beach swimming enclosure at Port Douglas while authorities try to work out how to free it.

An ambulance officer with a drone who has been monitoring the shark told Newsport attempts to lower the net have so far been unsuccessful, but authorities would continue to work to free it.

Reef sharks are not considered too dangerous to humans, but can bite if cornered.

A crowd of about two dozen curious onlookers and lifeguards are gathered on the beach to witness the event.

One lady even began wading into knee-deep water before lifeguards called her out.

The shark is believed to have found its way in overnight, with one early-morning beachgoer taking a photo at about 6.45am.

The trapped shark follows another incident about a fortnight ago when a 1m crocodile also made its way into the same swimming enclosure.
