While Mayor Scomazzon lists her top hope for 2025 as the region being able to get some “well-deserved respite” and focus on growth and celebrating the community spirit without the constant reminders of past hardships, residents have taken to Newsport’s Facebook page to express hope for some action from council and state authorities.

Frank Asman says he is looking forward to council “actually” completing commitments.

“Helping the now defunct cane growers move into different crops seamlessly, without bureaucratic red tape handed out by council,’’ he said.

“Also, maybe stimulating growth by allowing larger land owners subdivide land for their children so they can build lives and families for the Shire’s continued prosperity.’’

Steve Doble wants to see action at the Port Douglas Sports Complex.

“Hey Mayor, what about enacting the 6-year-old $50,000 Sports Precinct Master Plan we all paid for and you committed as a councillor in the last term to move forward to create equitable sharing of facilities between clubs, in particular offering improved services to netball, cricket and ladies AFL?’’

Emily Beutel and Therese Maloney shared their frustrations over inadequate drainage in their streets and its contribution to flooding of properties.

“Our street is still waiting for drainage to be installed after being provided with inadequate drainage that results in house flooding time and time again,’’ Ms Beutel said.

“This is 25 years after it was initially installed and that has never been maintained. It is a mound of tar on one side of the road that allows for water to pool up then flow through our properties.

“I have absolutely no faith in this council, the previous ones or any in the future. 25 + years to receive drainage.... which is something that legally the council should be providing.’’
