Residents of the Douglas Shire under 65 now have access to a free Community Transport service, launched by the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre to address a decades-long need.

Operated by volunteers and staff, the service helps residents access shopping, health appointments, community services, and social activities.

Tracy Gibson, Community Recovery Connect Worker at the Centre, highlighted the importance of the initiative.

“The community has been advocating for this service for 25 years due to the area's isolation and lack of public transport options. We’ve now secured a grant to provide it on a more stable basis,” she said.

The service has already made a meaningful impact. “The other day, I was driving a man who is legally blind, and he was so grateful for the service. Moments like that really show how much it is needed,” Ms Gibson added.

Volunteer drivers needed

To ensure the program’s sustainability and growth, the Centre is seeking additional volunteer drivers.

Volunteers need a driver’s license and a Blue Card, which the Centre can help arrange. The role is flexible, allowing volunteers to contribute as their schedules permit.

How the service works

Operating Monday to Friday during office hours (9 am to 4.30 pm, and until 3pm on Fridays), the service covers the entire shire and even extends to Cairns for medical appointments not covered by patient travel assistance.

Trips can also include journeys between locations like Cow Bay, Port Douglas, and Mossman for essential errands.

While the service is free, Gold Coin donations are encouraged to help cover fuel costs. Bookings must be made at least 24 hours in advance, ensuring availability and coordination.

Although this program's funding is specifically designated to support vulnerable individuals under 65, the Centre offers several options for those over 65:

  • Cairns Return Bus: Join our return bus service to Cairns on the last Thursday of each month. It’s just $10 for members and $15 for non-members.
  • Seniors Adventures Program: Enjoy an affordable and fun day trip to a local attraction! For just $10, transport, admission fees, and lunch are all included.
  • My Aged Care Support: We can assist you in registering with My Aged Care, which may provide funding for transport and other services.
  • Emergency Relief Transport: For urgent situations, we offer transport through our Emergency Relief budget.
