Who are the big bands coming to Port Douglas for Savannah Sounds?

This is the burning question on the lips of many Douglas Shire locals following yesterday’s announcement of a brand new weekend festival event for Carnivale time in May.

Savannah Sounds director James Dein says the line-up won’t be finalised for at least a couple of weeks, leaving plenty of time to speculate about what big names may be on the way to the far north.

There will be “some amazing country, rock and pop music”, Dein says.

“We’re still working it out.”

What we do know so far is: The Friday night will feature a DJ set, the huge Saturday program is anyone’s guess, and the Sunday will be set aside for more local offerings.

“We’re gonna lean into some electronic music on Friday night, a little bit of doof,” Dein says.

“From 2pm (on Saturday) we’ll have live music - some big-name bands will play.”

“On Sunday there will be local bands from North Queensland, there’s so many up here.”

“It’s going to be curated for all demographics and I just think it will be a breath of fresh air.”

Savannah Sounds is an offshoot of the successful Savannah in the Round festival held annually in Mareeba in October.

Some of the acts playing there last year included such household names as The Living End, Hoodoo Gurus and Vika & Linda.

If our Shire can attract big names such as that, fans will likely turn out in droves.

Savannah Sounds Port Douglas, on May 23-25 at Rex Smeal Park as part of Port Douglas Carnivale, is presented by Douglas Shire Council and the major sponsor is Newsport.
