The Douglas Shire Historical Society is very pleased to announce it has been awarded funding from the Tin Shed in their January round.

For some time, the popular publication “Cattle, Cane and Cedar” has been sold out.

This book documents the evolution of many of the farming techniques used in the Douglas Shire over the decades, with photos of the machinery, and interviews with the farmers describing their work.

It is a priceless record of practices which are often no longer used, and with the closure of the Mossman Central Mill, it is an essential historical document.

The first edition was released in 2014 with an update in 2015. Ken Keith, who now lives in Brisbane, was the instigator of this project, with assistance from John and the late Annette Anich, and Belinda Peters.

They have been working on an updated edition, and this financial assistance from the Tin Shed will fund the printing of new copies.

They will be available in two months from the Douglas Shire Historical Society, at the Port Douglas Court House Museum, or online at www.douglashistory.org.au
