Two vehicles have been badly damaged in a car accident at the intersection of Macrossan and Owen Streets, Port Douglas, around 2.30pm today, Monday February 10.

Pedestrians and store owners were alerted to the crash by a loud bang but report that despite the heavy hit taking its toll on the vehicles, the occupants appeared to have emerged relatively unscathed.

Emergency services were quickly on the scene to assist and clean up the wreckage.

The incident raised comment about the effectiveness of new speed limits introduced to Macrossan Street last November, one trader suggesting that in the times previous to the speed limit drop they had not been witness to such a dramatic crash.

Residents and traders had plenty to say at the time the new speed limits came in, with large red painted road speed zones on the road sparking outrage from many.
