Ol Mate Fisherman, the missing makeshift Captain Cook Highway statue which captured hearts across the region this month has been found face down in a ditch just metres from the rocky outcrop he stood upon.

Newsport was contacted late Monday night by a Joe Smith who shared a picture and the location of the statue.

Details in the email to Newsport were light and we are working to confirm if Ol Mate has been moved to safety or remains in the ditch across the road from his perch, about 5km south of Wangetti.

The statue disappeared overnight last Wednesday, February 12, outraging many, with 93 per cent of more than 400 people who voted in a snap poll by Newsport saying e should remain as a permanent fixture.

Newsport obtained footage and an interview with Ol Mate just hours before the installation went missing.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Douglas Shire Council had come under undeserving fire from readers for possibly being behind the removal of the pop-up artwork, but shut down that talk promptly.

Calls have been made for the statue to become a permanent fixture, a question that will now be put to council.
