A Cape York man has been arrested following a harrowing incident for two young girls in Cairns yesterday.

At about 7.50pm on Wednesday, April 16, the 50-year-old man reportedly approached two 17-year-old girls sitting inside a car in McLeod St and tried to remove the keys from the ignition.

The driver allegedly tried to stop the man taking the keys, when the car key broke off in the ignition and the man walked away.

Police tracked the man down on Florence Street at about 8pm and searched him, where they allegedly found cannabis and a pair of scissors.

He was charged with unlawful entry of a vehicle, drug possession and possessing a drug utensil.

He is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on Thursday, May 1.
