Rain off the coast of Weipa was on the radar at 8.30am this morning.

A tropical low off the coast of Weipa has a moderate chance of turning into a cyclone by late today, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

But the system is also predicted to turn away from the Queensland coast before making landfall, and may have further impacts on the other side of the Gulf of Carpentaria across the next week.

Gale wind warnings have been issued for the next 24 hours, with a further gale watch warning for the day after.

“There is always some uncertainty associated with tropical cyclone forecasting,” a BOM release states.

“Tropical Low 30U has a moderate chance of developing into a tropical cyclone as it moves westwards across the Gulf of Carpentaria during Monday.”

A Severe Weather Warning has been issued for damaging winds and heavy rainfall in the northeast Top End coast for late today.

At 3.30am this morning the winds at the centre of the low were 55km/h, with gusts up to 85km/h.
