Fiji Airways is now flying between Cairns, Fiji and the US.

Far North Queenslanders can now fly direct to Fiji on Fiji Airways after the airline this week started a new service.

The Fiji airline has started up at Cairns Airport for the first time with a year-round service, with the flight to Fiji city Nadi taking about four hours.

Travellers also have the option of flying on to other destinations such as the US.

The first flight touched down at the airport’s international terminal at about 11.30am on Thursday, with the first flight taking off today.

To celebrate the launch, the airline has been offering discount fares until Monday (14 April). Some return flights have been available for about $540, while some return flights to  Los Angeles and San Francisco in the US have been about $1000.

Fiji Airways chief executive Andre Viljoen called the opening a major milestone.

“We’re thrilled to provide faster one-stop connections to North America, saving three hours and skipping extra stopovers for Aussies in the region,” he said.

Cairns Airport chief executive Richard Barker agreed.

“Destinations such as Los Angeles and San Francisco are now just 16 hours away, slashing nearly three hours of travel time and eliminating the need for additional stops in other Australian ports,” he said.

The new flights are predicted to bring a $62m windfall to Far North Queensland across the next three years.
