Man arrested for carrying a weapon in public

A man who had travelled down from Aurukun has been arrested for walking the Cairns CBD streets brandishing a pair of scissors.

The 26-year-old Aurukun man, who had a warrant out on him at the time, was picked up by police near the corner of Grove and Sheridan Streets at about 6pm last night.

A concerned member of the public called the police alleging a drunk man was walking around with a knife, but when officers arrived they found he was carrying a pair of scissors.

The man was charged with possessing a weapon in public, public nuisance and failing to appear.

He was refused bail and will appear before the Cairns Magistrates Court today, April 4.
