Dangerous weekend on Douglas Shire roads with multiple crashes

A damaged motorbike with broken handlebars remained propped up next to the Captain Cook Highway south of Port Douglas on Sunday morning after a crash on Saturday evening.

A man in his 20s was rushed to Cairns Hospital with a leg injury after the incident on the Wangetti Beach Road corner just after 6.30pm on Saturday, April 12.

The crash was one of at least four on roads in our region on the weekend, with Queensland Police issuing a warning for motorists to stay extra vigilant in the lead-up to Easter.

A man in his 30s was taken to Mossman Hospital on Friday night after a single-vehicle crash in the Lower Daintree area, the Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed.

The man suffered back, chest and leg pain following the crash on Mossman Daintree Road at 9.35pm on Friday, April 11. 

And a man was taken to Mossman Hospital after a motorbike crash on Bow Street at 5.10pm on Saturday, April 12.

A man was also spotted calling for help on the Captain Cook Highway at about 7.45pm last night (Sunday, April 13) after his car had gone off into a ditch on the side of the road on a dangerous bend south of Wangetti.

A police spokesman said they would be increasing roadside breath and drug testing across the state in line with the Easter weekend, which was one of the busiest periods.

Meanwhile, emergency services were also called out to a structure fire on Saleyard Road at Araluen on Saturday morning at about 6.20am.
