The traditional Easter fare of seafood has been selling like hot crossed buns down at the Port Douglas waterfront today, as shoppers embrace one of the busiest times on the prawn and fish calendar.

Queensland fishers say they have had a bumper season, with the more than $600m fisheries sector embracing Good Friday and Easter Saturday as people flock to seafood outlets across the state.

The Port Douglas dock is one of the most popular spots in the region to buy seafood, with Santiego Seafoods’ Tracey Moull one of the family members selling fresh prawns and other delicacies out of the ocean from the back of the boat every year.

“Easter’s one of the busiest sales times, Easter and Christmas,” Tracey says.

“Everyone’s fresh seafood caught from the Coral Sea, you can’t get any better than that.”

The family-owned business fishes anywhere from about Double Island all the way up to Cooktown, then sells straight off the boat in Port Douglas about once a month.

“It’s all local,” Tracey says.

“Boats go out three weeks every trip, come home for about a week to refuel and restock, then they go back out again from March until mid December.”
