New manager to carry Dougies Backpackers' legacy forward

Dan Tiffin is set to continue the legacy of Dougies Backpackers, which recently received a reprieve to keep its operations running amid delays in the Gurner Development project.

Starting his role as manager on December 1st, Mr Tiffin will take the reins as Heather and Steve Yarr, who built the backpackers resort from the ground up over the past 26 years, step back from their positions. 

A familiar face in the Port Douglas community for eight years, Mr Tiffin brings valuable experience from the local hospitality industry. 

Newsport caught up with him to discuss his background and vision for the future of Dougies.

Newsport: Can you share a bit about your background and what experience you bring to the role of manager at Dougies?

Dan Tiffin: I arrived in Australia as a backpacker in 2017 from Newcastle, England, and got a job at Hemingway’s Brewery in Port Douglas. After checking into Dougies, I enjoyed the town's relaxed vibe right away. I eventually became Hemingway’s Venue Manager before transitioning to the brewery as an assistant brewer and then a sales ambassador.

In 2021, I started Craft Distributors, focusing on distributing independent craft beverages across Far North Queensland while offering licensed catering for various events. With the growth of my business, I can now hire someone to run operations. When Steve and Heather offered me the opportunity to lease Dougies, I knew it was the perfect fit. I’m excited to help keep Dougies alive and work with the incredible team there, immersing myself again in the vibrant backpacker culture that makes our town special.

Newsport: Can you describe your connection to Dougies and your relationship with Steve and Heather that led to you taking on this role?

Dan Tiffin: Over the years, I've built a business relationship supplying craft beers to Dougies and developed friendships with Steve, Heather, and Ro, Steve's brother. As strong supporters of our community, we often discussed Dougies' future on the golf course. Given its significance, I approached Steve with the opportunity to help keep it thriving.

Newsport: What does Dougies mean to you personally, and why is it important for you to take on this role?

Dan Tiffin: Dougies has always been a favourite spot for hospitality workers like me to unwind after shifts. It offered a unique sense of community, making Port Douglas feel like home. Over the years, I have made some very close friends at Dougies, from all over the world. 

Newsport: What are you most excited about as you step into this new role at Dougies?

Dan Tiffin: I’m excited to continue running Dougies as an integral part of Port Douglas, providing short-term accommodation for international visitors working in hospitality and tourism. It's an honour to continue this legacy.

My management style reflects that of Steve and Heather;fostering good relationships with a relaxed, friendly approach that builds unity and trust. While putting my own touch on it, I will endeavour to continue to cultivate a culture of caring for guests and ensuring they enjoy their time at both Dougies and Port Douglas.

I am also excited to take on the challenges and experiences that come with my time operating Dougies. I am very lucky to have a network of close friends in the hospitality industry as well as incredible support from my partner, Kiely.
