A wave of red and yellow patrol caps will splash onto Four Mile Beach this weekend, 14 and 15 September, as the Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club hosts their two-day carnival.

Port Douglas will be a hive of activity with nearly 200 life savers plus their families, friends, and supporters from Mission Beach, Etty Bay, Cairns, and Ellis Beach competing in a mix of beach and ocean events from U8’s up to masters.

Irene Cats, Port Douglas Surf Lifesaving Club President said it will be a big weekend with many of the club’s kids and adults gung-ho to compete on their own surf.

“Everyone is putting in lots of hours training every week so it will be exciting to see everyone giving it their all on our home beach.

“The U9s and U11s have been smashing all season long, keep an eye out for them,” she said.

The spectacle of surf lifesaving events includes beach sprints, beach relays, 1 or 2-km runs, surf swims, board races, ski races, iron person, and the mixed master's double ski race which is the Steve Pollard Trophy.

All events complement skills the surf lifesavers developed during years of training through commitment and passion for a higher purpose: to save lives.

“The lifesaving sport keeps our lifesavers fit and gets the kids ready to become lifesavers,” Ms Cats said.

“Our volunteer lifesavers patrol Four Mile Beach on Sundays and public holidays from April - November, making sure that the busiest beach in North Queensland is safe.”

Although the club's growth is good in nipper numbers, and small growth in adults and lifesavers there is very much a real need for more people to join and become lifesavers.

Anyone from 14 years old and up is welcome to join and the club will provide all training for free.

Port Douglas has a proud history of involvement in the surf lifesaving movement. The hometown club is honoured to be able to showcase their skills and dedication on their beach and to encourage the community to show their support by getting out and enjoying the carnival.

Surf Lifesaving Carnival vibes are great, no matter who wins or loses, everyone is always in high spirits. With surf and weather conditions set on perfect for competitors and spectators make your way to the beach and witness the fun and excitement of being a surf lifesaver.
