The local heroes emerging from the devastation of Tropical Cyclone Jasper last December will be celebrated by The Douglas Local Disaster Management Group in a recognition ceremony in Mossman on Thursday, October 10.

Invites have been issued to 45 individuals and groups that have been nominated or recognised in their own community as “local heroes” during and in the wake of the December 13 cyclone and flooding event.

The Local Disaster Management Group put a call out to the community to seek to identify those that went above and beyond during Cyclone Jasper.

People have been nominated for a diverse range of actions, including helping neighbours prepare their property, assisting with clean up, supplying dry bedding and food, rescuing others from flood waters, facilitating community hubs to offer services and checking in on isolated community members.

Douglas Shire Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said community spirit was on show following Cyclone Jasper.

“Douglas Shire residents certainly displayed an amazing community spirit following Cyclone Jasper and the floods that followed,’’ she said.

“While much of our focus is now on recovery and moving forward, we thought it was important to reflect and recognise those who went above and beyond to help others during this devastating weather event.

“The ceremony is an opportunity to give these people a pat on the back and thank them for rolling up their sleeves and helping their community in the toughest of times.”
