It’s all a bit fishy

Read The Story

Gaye Fergusson, Letter to Editor

I just drove past the fish farm on my way home. The smell is atrocious. What is going on in that farm? Are all the fish dead? It smells like it.

Do we know what’s going wrong in there?

At times it wafts into my house.  Very unpleasant!

Thomas Ashendorf - Newsport Facebook

I went to the Farm to investigate, the manager told me they were sorry about the smell but it wasn’t that bad, I live up the road and it is sickening. Never had any issues with the prawn farm before, council said it has nothing to do with it, hello it is in our shire! The manager informed me if we get rain the smell should disappear . Not good enough, sorry

Michelle Sayre - Newsport Facebook

The smell is offensive. Expressed our concerns in writing and of course no outcome. Except for GBRMPA who said it’s not their problem.

Gregg Paterson AFSM - Newsport comments

Good insight Lawrence. We moved to Port Douglas 2 years ago now and still learning about the challenges the community face with the issues you raise, I will now follow these issues with interest.

Having spent 40+ years in emergency management it is my opinion that there have been many lost opportunities to learn from current disasters and building resilience within our communities.

Both the local and state governments to this day have not formally engaged with communities to understand lived experiences from Jasper and its aftermath. After action reviews at community level, district disaster management level and indeed state level are important activities to learn the lessons from community lived experiences, develop and implement affirmative action plans that not only improve preparedness, response and recovery activities but also contribute to building community resilience.

It is one thing for disaster management agencies to debrief themselves, however my EM experience tells me that our communities need far better engagement at all levels. And we as community members need to hold agencies to account for this lack of leadership, engagement and opportunity.

Sad sentence for serious offending

Read Bill Nankervis’s Letter

Ryan Fudala - Newsport Facebook

The sentence is probably what needs to be handed out for just being caught with that type of driving history, added to that should be for causing a death, thirdly an this one really resonates with me is to teach our kids to not put themselves in these positions. Accidents happen every day an adding alcohol makes it so much worse, some times you need to be instilled to say no an not crumble cause it's friends or family.

Can't say I have any faith left in the system. Don't believe justice was served. Waited longer for the court case then what he will spend serving time.

Robert - Newsport comments

Well stated Bill - absolutely agree with your comments - hopefully the "powers that be" will take note and this case will be re-opened.
