One of Port Douglas’s favourite’s Jessica Whitworth, 40, lost her more than four year battle with cancer on Wednesday, November 20, passing away while surrounded by her loved ones at the Cairns Hospital.

Ahead of a celebration of Jess’s life to be held at Rex Smeal Park on Sunday, November 24 from 5pm, close friends and family have paid tribute to Jess, a highly respected and well-loved person in the Port Douglas community.

“With the passing of Jess Whitworth, we have sadly lost our beautiful friend and colleague, and Port Douglas itself has lost a true friend,’’ they said.

“Jess loved this community, the place and the people, and dedicated her time and energy right up to her final weeks promoting and striving to achieve better things for Port Douglas through her participation on what seemed like every tourist board going.

“Jess touched so many lives and we are all hurting at the moment but we know that Jess would want us to laugh more than cry.

“Much like the forthcoming onset of the wet season it feels like there is a huge grey cloud over us at the moment, but the grey clouds and our grief will ease gradually over time and the sun will reappear.

“The impact that Jess had on Port Douglas and on the lives of so many people in our community is forever, and Jess’s memory will live forever.’’

“If you cry because the sun has gone out of your life, your tears will prevent you from seeing the stars" - Rabindranath Tagor
