The latest edition of Newsport Print is now out on the streets, with a new stockist in BP Port Douglas among the many outlets across the Shire where you can pick up your FREE copy.

Packed full of local news, familiar faces from across the district and mountains of information on what to do and where to go to give your support to community organisations and local businesses, Newsport Print is the local “how to” digest for Douglas.

While the editorial and sales team behind the content are key to harvesting that news, there’s a just as important team working in the background to make it a reality…. Mossman Print.

Boss Roy Weavers says producing Newsport Print is “extremely satisfying”, and not just because he gets first look at the paper of the region he’s called home for the past 22 years.

“You get the council and business leaders all saying ‘do it in Douglas’ … but not many do,’’ Roy said.

“The fact that Newsport does have a Douglas business printing its paper is special.

Roy said that having come from a UK newspaper background and moving into a print business in Douglas, he never thought he and wife Annie, and son Neil, would ever be as involved in printing a newspaper again.

“It is a very high end product,’’ he said.

“This is a genuine show of local companies working together for a great outcome for our community.’’

“What I like most is the way Newsport has broken all the rules by coming offline to put out a print product that is the size and style that they want.

“There’s a great deal of great feedback about it. It is unique and it is Douglas’s paper. Now there’s going to be other media outlets that follow its lead.’’

Mossman Print, now in William Street, has had as tough a challenge as any business and resident in Mossman over the past 12 months recovering from flooding impacts in the wake of Cyclone Jasper, but are now back running better than ever.

“That nearly got us,’’ Roy said.

“Had it not been for Warren Entsch (Federal Member for Leichhardt) we were probably done for but he was able to help us navigate the insurance and get the assistance we needed to be able to get up and running again.

“We got new machines and we got back running in a place we thought would be as much space as we would ever need, but we’ve filled it and we are running stronger and more efficient than ever.’’
