Fans probably already believed Australia’s best ice cream was right here in Port Douglas – and now it’s been confirmed.

The owners of Wicked Ice Cream, Michelle and David Middleton, are proudly basking in the glory of a host of awards from the state’s Royal Queensland Awards in Brisbane – for their ‘Coconut Delight’ sorbet, which was voted best in the country in its category and described as “magic” by the judges.

Michelle told Newsport that she and husband David are very proud of their awards, which included 17 other prizes – a heap of silvers and a bronze for many other flavours (such as Creamy Gourmet Banana which won Champion Flavoured Ice Cream or Gelato of Show) but the coconut sorbet came out on top.

“There was about five different panel judges and out of all 18, they thought that was the better one,” Michelle said.

“Russell Smith – he’s the national judge – said that because it was so creamy and smooth, it didn’t taste like a sorbet and there was absolutely no trace of ice particles in it, which is pretty hard to do.”

She said probably their biggest challenge in entering the competition – was actually getting the ice cream products to the show.

“The transport was the problem because we had to get it all the way down by truck to Brisbane,” she said, “so it was a pretty big feat.”

Next, the Wicked Ice Creams couple hope to conquer the biggest show of all – Sydney, where they’ll be up against some of the world’s toughest sorbet, gelato and ice cream competition from places like Italy, but are confident regardless.

They’re particularly happy that finally their efforts paid off at this year’s Brisbane show, after things went wrong during previous attempts to get their entries there.

“We’ve been doing it for three years and every year, something’s gone wrong with the transport, it hasn’t landed on time, or the top of the ice-cream tubs didn’t seal one year, so that discarded the whole lot," she said.

But for now, they’re savouring the moment with their ‘sweet’ wins and have sent a message to their customers via social media.

“Thanks to everyone. We are happy to showcase our little shop in Port Douglas to Australia," she said.
