As you pedal through fields of swaying cane with majestic mountains in the backdrop, wind in your hair, and the sun on the horizon, you’re about to embark on a special journey - a Mossman highlights e-bike tour.

Launched by Rod and Ange Johnson from Port Douglas Bike Shop & Hire, this self-guided tour invites locals and visitors to explore Mossman’s stunning landscapes and rich heritage as never before, promising an unparalleled experience in the region.

Recognising the challenges faced by the local community, particularly after the closure of the mill, Rod and Ange conceptualised the e-bike tour to boost tourism and support the town.

“With attractions like Mossman Gorge, cafes, markets, the Shannonvale winery and chocolate farm, Mossman holds immense potential as a vibrant destination,” Rod said.

“Encouraging more businesses to include Mossman in various itineraries could greatly benefit the community and provide a diverse experience for tourists beyond reef and Daintree attractions.”

Angela added, “We regularly had to turn away tourists who wanted to ride to Mossman on bicycles or 50cc mopeds due to safety concerns. To address this, we designed the e-bike tour to showcase the unparalleled beauty of the area while ensuring the safety of our visitors.”

Tour Highlights

The tour kicks off at Cooya Beach, where participants are dropped off and equipped with eBikes, helmets, GPS guidance, and maps before setting off on their adventure.

Riding through breathtaking landscapes along the newly constructed bike path, cyclists are treated to panoramic views of the iconic Far North Queensland landscape.

For those booking the tour on a Saturday, a stop at the Mossman markets nestled under the raintrees awaits, providing an opportunity to immerse in the local culture or savour a delightful breakfast at one of the charming cafes nearby.

Continuing the journey towards Mossman Gorge, participants are transported to an oasis of tranquillity. With entry and shuttle services included, visitors can explore the Baral Marrjanga trail, offering stunning views of the river and surrounding mountains from an elevated boardwalk.

Next on the itinerary is a visit to the Shannonvale Causeway, inviting cyclists to take a refreshing dip in the rustling waters amidst the lush rainforest. Then, it’s off to the Shannonvale Tropical Fruit Winery, where the senses are tantalised with blends of unique tropical fruit wines.

Finally, the tour concludes at the Australian Chocolate Farm, where guided tours and divine chocolate tastings await, providing a sweet finale to an unforgettable journey.

Flexibility and inclusion

Angela emphasised the tour's flexibility, allowing participants to customise their experience.

“The self-guided format offers a leisurely day lasting approximately 5 to 6 hours, allowing participants to navigate at their own pace using GPS devices on the bikes," she clarified.

“This caters to different preferences, whether spending more time at the markets or exploring Mossman Gorge thoroughly.

“We recently tailored an itinerary for a couple who had already visited Mossman Gorge. Instead, we arranged for them to play nine holes of golf and have lunch at Silky Oaks. They loved it and suggested making it an official option.”

“The key is flexibility, with tailored drop-offs and pickups to maximise the day’s enjoyment. The roads are generally quiet farm roads, making them safe for families and even young children on e-bikes. This makes the tour suitable for everyone, including families with small children and large groups of up to 20 people.”
