For over 10 years, the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre (PDNC) Child and Parent Support Program has been a cornerstone for new parents and caregivers, providing a safe and supportive environment for parents in the area.

After identifying a need in the community for more activities that introduce parents to each other, PDNC created an Open Playgroup and New Parents Group to foster connections within the community.  PDNC’s Family Support Worker, Erin Easton, said there is a real need for the space in the community, particularly being in a rural area.

“Port Douglas is a place where people hail from everywhere and many don’t have much family support. We all know it takes a village to raise a child so this is somewhere for people to come and find their village”.

And find it they have. Feedback over the past decade has seen many parents make lifelong friends at the center with Mrs Easton herself among them. “I took my first child to the New Parents Group and made friends that I still have today and it’s a similar story for so many,” she explained.

For just a gold coin donation, both sessions are accessible and open to all parents and caregivers whether you are local or just visiting.

With onsite family support, these groups are not just a chance to foster connections but also offer a safe space to get guidance from a professional. “During playgroup, there is a family support worker on site for those who want to have a chat about any problems or issues they are facing in a no pressure, informal way,” explained Mrs Easton.

Running Monday - Wednesday from 9:30am - 11:30am, Playgroup is for parents with children aged 0-5 and offers indoor, outdoor and messy play, where children can enjoy play-based learning and carers can enjoy connection and support. Ms Easton said the center has a lot to offer for growing and curious little ones. “People are often quite pleasantly surprised by what we have here and the variety in our sessions,” voiced Mrs Easton.

For those with new bubs up to 12 months, the New Parents Group is held Thursday mornings from 10am - 12pm focusing on carers during a time that can often be difficult to navigate. “When you have a new baby it can be really daunting so the aim of this group is to meet other parents with children of the same age, make connections and have a bit of a break,” said Mrs Easton. “We also have a child and maternal health nurse visiting this group who can be seen via appointment”.
