Dear Editor,

For the past 10 years, l have tried to get Douglas Shire Council to implement a cat curfew without success even after a poll in Newsport had a majority voting in support of it.

As we all know cats are the most destructive animal introduction to Australia, possibly rabbits come second.

Most of the killing of wildlife by cats occurs at night, therefore a night curfew would save a lot of native animals.

Curfews have been and are being introduced in lots of Councils throughout Australia, with success.

Would the Council please introduce a cat curfew to save our native wildlife or explain why have won’t and save our wildlife?

We aren’t against cats, there are a lot of cat owners that are being responsible and keeping their cat indoors at night.

We just don’t want them wandering around at night killing the wildlife in our towns and a percentage going wild into our World Heritage Area.

Regards,

Cliff Mitting
