It’s been a long time coming and talked about for as long as any Douglas Shire resident can remember but today Councillors approved a Port Douglas splash park design that will be “multidimensional” and tap into our region’s indigenous culture, rainforests, beaches and local tourism assets like Mossman Gorge.

At this morning’s latest ordinary meeting and after months of waiting Council discussed the merits of choosing between two designs for the future Jalunbu based park, with option B, getting the nod – the only dilemma, Council acknowledged the larger splash park is expected to cost an additional $1.55M – funds it said are not in the project’s original budget.

Council papers said while the additional funds required will be included in the 2024-2025 budget review, Council will need and seek to pursue additional funding opportunities to cover the $1.55M shortfall.

The more expensive splash park option will be surrounded by picnic areas, BBQ’s and include car parking enhancements.

Council said when completed Port Douglas splash park “could be an iconic destination for tourists and residents to frequent”.

Prior to the meeting in its publicly revealed agenda papers, Council suggested through discussing risk management implications “that after years of consultation within the community, it is clear a splash park in Port Douglas would be a welcome addition.

“Not proceeding with the project would bring potential reputational damage.”

All Councillors spoke positively about the plan B option and it got passed unanimously.

Council told Newsport construction on the project is due to start in November, with the build expected to finish by June next year – exactly one year behind schedule.

Council said the other option for the smaller designed splash park build had included a two-dimensional layout, simple inclusions and had no barbeque or shelters.
