A Far North Police representative just moments ago confirmed with Newsport that a man is now in custody at Port Douglas Police Station in relation to an alleged armed robbery that took place at Port IGA earlier this morning.

The spokesperson revised the aged of the alleged offender, telling Newsport they believe the person in custody is thought to now be in his late teens, or 20s.

It's understood the man is likely to face a Cairns Court tomorrow in relation to this morning's earlier incident at the IGA.

UPDATE 11.28AM, Sunday, June 23

Far North Police continue to hunt for a man, thought to be in his 30s who allegedly robbed Port IGA supermarket this morning.

Just moments ago a leading detective told Newsport the man entered the building at 8.15am, where he allegedly produced a “sharp edged weapon”, thought to be a knife and proceeded to demand a quantity of cash from a person working behind a cash register.

Police confirmed noone was hurt or sustained injuries during the incident.

The spokesperson told Newsport they believe the alleged offender is previously known to them and that they do have a person of interest they are now trying to locate.

The alleged offender is thought to have left the scene in a car - the make and model remains unconfirmed at this time.

The spokesperson said there “is no ongoing risk to community safety in the Douglas Shire” following the incident.

Police said they are “confident they can locate the alleged offender and bring an arrest in this case”.

The IGA is expected to re-open later today.

8.15AM: A short time ago, the tranquil atmosphere at Cornetts IGA Supermarket near the Wildlife Habitat in Port Douglas was shattered by a brazen armed hold-up. Startled staff members swiftly alerted authorities, prompting a rapid police response to the scene. 

The store was promptly secured and closed off as officers commenced inquiries, interviewing shaken employees and customers about the crime. 

Police on scene were tight lipped about the incident, the sex of the offender and the weapon used. Queensland Police have been contacted by Newsport for further information.
