More than two weeks have passed but a trap stll remains in place to capture a local animal dubbed a danger to Douglas Shire residents at Warri Park wetlands.

A much liked Douglas Shire saltwater crocodile has called the waters of the local waterway home for more than two years but as Newsport reported just days ago, its days in the quaint waterhole, adjacent to Port Douglas road, appear numbered.

Several Douglas Shire residents contacted Newsport after questioning why the trap had been placed in the waterway.

The Department of Environment, Science and Innovation (DESI) soon confirmed they had received a complaint about the crocodile and its proximity to walkers and families in the area.

As such they deemed it a ‘problem croc’ and immediately targeted it for removal.

“An estimated two-metre crocodile that has been seen basking on pond banks in the suburb of Warri Park in Port Douglas has been declared a problem crocodile and is being targeted for removal from this location,” a (DESI) spokesperson told Newsport on June 18.

“Wildlife officers from the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation (DESI) set a floating trap on June 11 in response to a crocodile sighting report.

“Residents have reported that the crocodile has been observed in the ponds in Warri Park for some time and is basking on the banks near walking tracks, which are used by families and children.

“Following the sighting report, wildlife officers conducted an investigation and determined that due to the crocodile’s size and location, it represented a risk to the community."

Newsport visited the Park just days ago, where our video showed the trap remains in place to capture the crocodile.

What do you think? Do you believe the crocodile should be captured?
