From devastating landslides in the wake of Cyclone Jasper to the closure of Mossman's sugar mill, 2024 has been a year that will remain forever etched in the hearts of Douglas Shire residents.

In a series of 12 articles from each month of the year, Newsport Daily looks back on some of the biggest stories that have impacted Douglas locals the most.

JULY

The Mossman Show has again proven a big hit with the Douglas Shire community, with two days of fun, enjoyment, colour and movement for all to experience.

Ideal weather conditions and a great crowd turnout made for another successful showcase of the best agricultural exhibitions, competitions, rides, games and community displays the region has to offer.

Beginning on Sunday, the show saw a great turnout for the first day of events, hosting show jumping, the wood chopping competition, motorbike stunts from the Airtime FMX team, and for the first time the tractor pull which aimed to create a larger early audience.

Newsport spoke to Mossman and District Show Society President Matthew Hatfield about the introduction of the new event.

“It’s been a great start, the tractor pulling has attracted a lot of early starters which has made a difference in the number of visitors. The wood chopping also has attracted a large crowd which is good,” Mr Hatfield told us.

This year’s Show also introduced the Young Rural Ambassador Quest, with its goal to seek young enthusiastic members of the community to take part in promoting the show and taking part in community events in the lead up to the show.

Overall, the program recruited six Young Rural Ambassadors who have been contributing a lot of work not only to the Show itself, but also to the community in general in recent weeks.

It’s safe to say that the 2024 Mossman Show will be marked as a great success, bringing the Douglas Shire together and displaying what the region has to offer in way of agriculture and artwork.

The two-day show finishes off tonight with a firework display over the showgrounds at 8pm.

Some of the ribbon winners from this year’s show include:

Nikita McDonald – Highest aggregate of points for Junior Culinary.

Kevin Jack – Annual Show Grand Champion for the cattle competitions.

Brie Brie Estate – Champion sugar cane exhibit.
