Douglas Shire locals have been twirling, stepping, and spinning their way into joy with the introduction of ballroom dancing classes, thanks to energetic and passionate dance teacher Jeanfer Salas.

“Life is hard enough and dancing makes it less hard”, Ms Salas said, reflecting on her motivation to bring dance into our community.

When Ms Salas moved to the area 18 months ago, she looked for dance studios and social dance venues but found none nearby. Undeterred, she started her own program, ‘Keep on Dancing’. to offer the community a chance to experience the joy of ballroom dancing.

“I’ve experienced the joy dance has brought to my life, and I want to share that with others,” she explained. “That’s why I’m offering a beginners’ course for anyone interested in ballroom dancing or other styles. It’s a chance to meet people, have fun, and enjoy dancing.”

Originally from the Philippines, Ms Salas has a lifelong love for dance. With 26 years of experience in international ballroom competitions and 24 years of coaching, she brings a wealth of expertise to her classes. Specialising in Social Ballroom Dancing, she offers both group and private lessons.

“Teaching dance is a part of who I am,” Ms Salas said. “I love seeing people smile as they dance. It’s rewarding to watch them improve not just in their dancing but also in their overall well-being.”

Since launching her classes two months ago, she has met many locals of all ages and backgrounds who share her passion for dance.

“Every week, we look forward to catching up,” she noted. “It’s a fun way to stay active and meet new friends.

“Many of us come to class after work, using dance to release stress and boost happiness. Dance offers fitness, better balance, body coordination, and improved memory, contributing to a healthier Port Douglas community.”

One student expressed her gratitude for finally fulfilling a long-held dream of dancing. “She told me that she’s so happy to be learning and dancing beautifully,” Ms Salas shared. “She said I made her dream come true.”

Seeing couples enjoy dancing together is another highlight for Ms Salas. “It’s not every day you get to see couples doing something they both love,” she said. “Witnessing that is truly special.”

Ms Salas encourages everyone to step out of their comfort zones. “It might be a bit intimidating at first, but we’re all here to support each other. Don’t be afraid to try something new. Dancing benefits your soul, and you only live once, so you might as well bring some joy into your steps.”

Dance classes are held every Tuesday at 6.00pm and Wednesday  7.30pm in the Port Douglas Community Hall and every Friday at 6.30pm in the Mossman Community Hall. For more information, call Jeanfer at 0423 453 329.
