In considering secondary education options for your children in the Douglas Shire and the Tablelands, thoughts might often turn to Mossman or Cairns. Yet, Mareeba presents an equally compelling choice with St Stephen’s Catholic College, a beacon of holistic education, nurturing students’ minds, spirits, and talents.

As the college gears up for its Open Evening on Tuesday, 27th February, Principal Gary Conwell passionately speaks of the school’s commitment to cultivating well-rounded individuals, emphasising academic excellence alongside social and spiritual growth.

“At St Stephen’s, we invest in every aspect of our students’ development,” Mr Conwell explained. “Our aim is to instil qualities that extend beyond academics, shaping compassionate, engaged citizens of both local and global communities.”

The college offers a myriad of academic programs and extracurricular activities, fostering curiosity and achievement. From Brain Bee to Readers Cup, Opti Minds to Mooting, and Athletics Club to Literary Competitions, students are encouraged to explore their interests and talents.

Special programs such as Chess, Maths Camp, Instrumental Music, and the College Choir provide additional avenues for enrichment. Moreover, an active Student Agency Team promotes leadership opportunities, ensuring students play a vital role in college life.

Inclusivity and diversity

But beyond academics, St Stephen’s prides itself on fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.

"We emphasise care and respect for each other in how we learn together, how we teach and guide our students, how we treat minorities and people from diverse learning and cultural backgrounds, and in our understanding of the world,” Mr Conwell explained.

“From tailored learning programs to peer support initiatives, every effort is made to ensure that every member of the college community feels valued and supported.”

The school’s dedication to inclusivity is evident in its programs, such as the three day orientation for Year 7 students, which focuses on building connections and understanding school culture.

Additionally, Year 11 students participate in Social Emotional Learning lessons to support their peers in Year 7, fostering a supportive community environment.

Additionally, excitement mounts as the college prepares for its next chapter with the construction of an Innovation Centre, complementing its already impressive facilities like their multipurpose Holy Spirit Centre and vast outdoor sporting fields.

“This project will increase classrooms and add specialised learning areas for students to undertake studies,” Mr Conwell explained.

Parents and prospective students are invited to discover the St Stephen’s difference firsthand on the Open Evening on the 27th of February from 4.30pm.

Whether considering enrolment for a child entering Year 7 or seeking a quality Catholic education for a student in their senior years, all are welcome to explore the school's offerings and meet the dedicated teaching staff.

In a final message  to parents considering St Stephen’s Catholic College, Mr Conwell reassured parents that St Stephen’s is more than just a school; it’s a community committed to partnering with families to ensure every student reaches their potential.

For those interested in securing a place for the upcoming academic year, the deadline for enrolment applications for Year 7 in 2025 is Thursday, 28th March. Enrolment applications for all other year levels may be submitted at any time. Applications can be conveniently submitted through the school’s website, or reach out to the friendly staff directly at 4086 2500.
