A local couple’s picturesque dream property in the Daintree has turned to devastation in the aftermath of Cyclone Jasper. Having narrowly escaped the wreckage with their lives and losing all their possessions, they now appeal to the community for assistance.

Marney and Dave Gordon, who have resided on Cape Tribulation Road in Diwan for over two decades, faced unimaginable horror as constant rains over five days culminated in a catastrophic landslide on Monday, December 18th, demolishing their home and belongings.

Dave miraculously survived being swept away by the mud and debris, clinging to a tree until daylight, while Marney, trapped in her bed, feared for his safety.

After hours of uncertainty, they were finally reunited and efforts led by the SES and courageous locals culminated in the safe evacuation of the couple, with Dave airlifted to Cairns Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Despite undergoing surgery for multiple injuries, Dave faced the harrowing reality of losing his lower leg due to the severity of his injuries and is now on a long slow process towards recovery.

Meika Lane, daughter of Marney and Dave, shared, “Over the past 6 weeks, my parents have faced some of their toughest challenges”.

“With my mom staying at my grandparents house and my dad in hospitals in Brisbane and Cairns since December 19th, their lives have been completely disrupted. It’s been a life-altering experience that's difficult to fully grasp.

“Our focus now is on helping my nearly 60-year-old parents rebuild their lives and reunite once my dad completes his rehabilitation.”
