In a commendable move towards inclusivity, Cairns-based construction company, MiHaven, is expanding its branch of Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) with a new project being built in Mossman.

Offering purpose-built properties for individuals with high physical support needs, MiHaven Care already have a myriad of homes across the Far North including Cairns, Mareeba, Atherton and Innisfail.

It’s latest endeavour in Mossman will see two houses built on the one block, offering local residents that qualify for the NDIS access to independent living, each with three bedrooms with ensuite, and an onsite, overnight carer’s room ensuring 24-hour support from chosen care providers.

The homes cater specifically to individuals with extreme physical difficulties, offering a wheelchair-friendly environment with no steps, wide doors, lowered benches, and complete wet area bathrooms.

The decision to initiate this development in Mossman was informed by an expressed demand for accessible housing in the region, allowing individuals to live independently without relocating to larger urban centres like Cairns.

MiHaven Care’s General Manager, Laurie Armstrong, emphasised the project’s importance in the region and the community push behind it.

“We were receiving a lot of feedback and noticing that there was a real demand for the housing in Mossman,” she explained. “People don’t want to uproot their lives and move to Cairns, and they shouldn’t have to. Now it’s possible for residents to live independently and still be close to family and friends”.

Due to be complete by July, Ms Armstrong is encouraging anyone interested in calling one of these impressive MiHaven properties home, to reach out and start the process now.

“There is an application process to get the funding that unfortunately doesn’t happen overnight,” she explained.

MiHaven Care representatives will be visiting Mossman fortnightly to connect with support workers in the area and answer any questions they may have.
