Sharing the spirit: a Christmas message from the Combine Churches of Douglas Shire

The past year has been a tough year for all. From the 2023 flood event following Cyclone Jasper to the closure of the Mossman Mill, many locals are entering the festive season exhausted from the year's events.

It is thanks to the many support groups in our region that some of those doing it tough this year have received support or relief, whether that be in the form of donations, or simply that of human connection.

Pastor Nadia Abraham of the Douglas Shire Combined Churches shared with Newsport some of the ways their group has made a difference this year, as well as a Christmas message to residents of the Douglas Shire and beyond.

“We were lucky enough to receive additional funding right at the end of 2023 that we could give back into the community straight after the flood; even other churches from around Australia donated to us,'' Pastor Abraham said.

"On top of that, we also have done quite a few food donations this year to help residents get back on their feet.''

It is not uncommon for the Combined Churches group to be involved in local charity with their events such as ‘Sing for you supper’ putting a lot back into the community such as the donations to local primary schools earlier this year.

Pastor Abraham also mentioned a rise in locals visiting church over the past 12 months.

“A lot more people have approached us this year outside of our services,'' she said.

"We could offer emotional support and simply give them someone to talk to. We made a substantial difference after the floods.''

Now, with Christmas just around the corner, Pastor Abraham shares her Christmas message to the community and abroad.

“Christmas is about peace and love and care for one another,'' the Pastor said.

"Have comfort in the knowledge that community is so caring and loving; we have seen evidence of that this year. This is what Christmas is all about… Care for your neighbour.''
