Festive spirit fills Mossman Shire Hall on Christmas Day

On December 25th, the Mossman Shire Hall came alive with festive cheer as Mossman Support Services hosted their annual free Christmas Day lunch. 

The event, which has been a cherished tradition in the Douglas Shire for over 30 years, welcomed around 100 guests this year.

Matilda Muller, who coordinated this year’s gathering, highlighted the months of preparation that went into making the day a success. 

“This is my first year helping out in this capacity, and it’s been incredible to see how much heart and dedication goes into this event,” she said

The Christmas lunch was made possible through the hard work of volunteers, many of whom are connected to the local community centre.

“All of the volunteers here either don’t have someone to spend the day with or simply want to make someone else feel special,” Ms Muller shared.

Local businesses also played a crucial role, with one seafood shop donating a kilo of prawns for the celebration.

“All the food and Christmas presents are donated, along with everyone’s time. It’s a collective effort to ensure no one feels left out during the holiday season,” she added.

In the spirit of giving, leftover food from the lunch was set aside for those in the community who are struggling or unable to ask for help. 

“For me personally, it brings so much joy to see people coming together, helping each other out, and creating a sense of belonging on Christmas Day,” Ms. Muller said.
