It’s time to shine a spotlight again on our local schools and students, who have recently made a difference with their remarkable achievements and events.
Mossman State High School
Student Niamh Zillfleisch from Mossman State High School has been honoured with the prestigious 2025 Tuckwell Scholarship. This esteemed award recognizes students for their exceptional attributes in self-discipline, leadership, and community commitment.
Niamh excelled through a demanding 3-stage application process, culminating in a rigorous interview held in Canberra. Her success in securing the Tuckwell Scholarship reflects her dedication and impressive capabilities.
The scholarship provides both financial support and opportunities for personal development, including academic dinners and mentorship with previous alumni.
Miallo State School
Miallo State School hosted their annual Under 8s event, which was a hit with students. Activities included visiting the animal farm for cuddles, digging for pirate treasure, joining a mini police academy, decorating cupcakes, making and racing rockets, and much more. The event also saw participation from Daintree State School and Wonga Kindy Linq kids, making it a lively celebration of being Under 8.
St Augustine’s Mossman
St Augustine's Mossman celebrated the remarkable achievement of Principal Mrs Kym Bennett, who has been honoured with the prestigious Docemus Principals Award.
The school also recently celebrated ‘100 Days of School’ for Prep to Year 4, a day full of creativity and fun.
Students dressed up as 100-year-olds and engaged in a variety of activities, including painting, Lego building, a pop-up photo booth, and more. The event was a joyful celebration of learning and community spirit.
Gardening Club at Wonga Beach State School
This year, students at Wonga Beach State School have been hard at work establishing a vegetable and fruit garden, with the goal of utilising the produce for the school tuckshop and cooking classes.
Under the dedicated leadership of Gardening Club volunteers Jessica and Johnny, the project has flourished. At the recent Mossman Show, the Gardening Club's produce earned them eight first prizes and the title of Junior Fruit Champions.
The gardening club sells their produce on Friday afternoons from 1.30-2.30pm, so be sure to pop by Wonga Beach State School for some delicious, fresh produce.
Mossman State School
Mossman State School and Wonga Beach State School joined forces to host a memorable NAIDOC event, filled with engaging and culturally authentic activities.
The event was a tremendous success, marked by performances from the Cultural Dance Troupe and Choir. Notably, Mossman State School clinched the ‘Loudest School’ award in the NAIDOC Parade, highlighting their enthusiastic participation. A heartfelt thank you goes to the Mossman Bowls Club for their generous donation of $500, which contributed significantly to the event's success.
