MiHaven Care proudly inaugurated Mossman’s first Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) at 7 Thomas Street yesterday, marking a significant step forward in providing accessible housing options for individuals with high physical support needs.

The new development comprises two brand-new, purpose-built homes, each featuring three bedrooms with ensuites and dedicated overnight accommodation for carers.

Built according to High Physical Support NDIS design standards, these homes are tailored to support residents in achieving greater independence while ensuring that help is readily available around the clock.

The houses are now available, and the MiHaven team is eager to engage with potential tenants and collaborate with the community.

MiHaven is a Cairns-based construction company that has built numerous homes across the Far North, including Cairns, Mareeba, Atherton, and Innisfail. Since its inception, MiHaven Care has successfully accommodated over 53 individuals across 35 residences and remains committed to developing, building, and managing SDA.

This latest project solidifies MiHaven Care's reputation as a leading disability housing provider in the Far North region, ensuring that those with high physical support needs have the reliable assistance and community connection they deserve.

Laurie Armstrong, General Manager of MiHaven Care, emphasised the impact of this initiative on the local community.

“This development allows residents with high physical support needs to live independently while remaining close to their families and friends,” she said.

“In the past, individuals from the surrounding communities who faced health challenges often had no choice but to relocate to Cairns, which separated them from their loved ones and support networks.

“This project is a direct response to the strong demand we’ve seen in the area for accessible housing options.”

James and Sarah Mort, Company Directors of MiHaven, attended the launch and recognised it as a significant milestone. “We don’t just build homes; we create opportunities with a social impact,” Ms Mort stated.

“These homes are NDIS-registered, providing oversight for both residents and properties. Many individuals are unaware that after receiving their NDIS plan and completing an assessment, they can live more independently in purpose-built homes.

“Previously, limited options forced many young people under 65 into aged care. Now, those in unsuitable rentals can apply for SDA approval through NDIS, which is a lifelong, non-revocable guarantee, allowing flexibility to transfer plans across Australia. Understanding this process is key to improving living conditions and quality of life.”

Newell Beach resident Andrew Baumgaertner, who lives with multiple sclerosis, shared his thoughts on the importance of this development.

“It’s becoming increasingly challenging to live independently and find housing that meets my needs,” he said. “I’m currently working with a support person from the MS Society Queensland who is helping me navigate the NDIS process. I have a solid support system in place right now.”

When asked what it would mean for him to live in a home like this, Baumgaertner replied, “For me, it’s incredibly important. I didn’t realise how challenging daily living could become. Having a kitchen that is wheelchair accessible and other supportive features would really help me manage my daily life.”
