Local cyclist Tracey McLean is lucky to be alive after a heavy fall on the main road coming into Port Douglas.

Now she wants to use this near fatal accident to highlight the dangers bike riders face while enjoying their pastime and the importance of wearing a helmet.

Tracey was out riding with local group Reef and Rainforest Cycling Club when the awful incident happened.

Tracey’s husband Geoff, a very experienced bike rider, told Newsport that at the speed his wife’s head hit the road (approx. 30k’s per hour) it was equal to the energy of two tons coming down on her head “That’s why it’s vital every bike rider is wearing a good quality approved helmet, without that protection she would no longer be with us,” said Geoff. Watch the video after Tracey’s interview to see what happened.
