Mossman's very own league talent Bacho Salam recently returned home to receive a training boost from his Aunty Julie Salam, the owner of the Wawu Warriors in Mossman.

With over 30 years of experience as a highly dedicated Indigenous Trainer, Julie was the perfect choice to help Brisbane Tigers centre get back in shape for next season. After completing a two-week training stint with his aunt Julie, Bacho has now returned to Brisbane.

“As the pre-season in November approaches, I’m focused on getting in top shape to start strong,” Mr Salam explained.

“Aunt Julie, both family and my off-season trainer, is instrumental in my fitness journey. Our fantastic relationship centres on our shared passion for training.

“She provides valuable tips and insights, adapting workouts to accommodate injuries or limitations, ensuring I can perform at my best.

“I want to give a big thank you to her for always welcoming me and letting me use her gym to stay fit and strong when I come home. I’m really grateful.”

Born and raised in Mossman, Mr Salam started his footy career at Mossman Sharks as a junior before he made his QLD Cup debut with the Townsville Blackhawks before joining the Brisbane Tigers in 2022.

Despite setbacks from a shoulder reconstruction and a groin injury in the past two years that kept him sidelined, Mr Salam’s dedication and determination shines through.

In 2024, his goal is straightforward: prioritise his physical well-being.

“I've recognised the wear and tear my body has endured and am committed to taking better care of it,” he said.

“I understand that in the upcoming season, the little things matter, such as recovery, icing, nutrition, and staying hydrated. These details add up in the long run.

“I’m excited for the 2024 Queensland Cup. I’ve been out for a while, so I’m looking forward to next year.”

Off the football field, Mr Salam serves as an Indigenous coordinator and mentor at the Artie Beetson Academy in Brisbane, guiding students to achieve their academic and behavioural goals for school success.
