A day to celebrate and encourage random acts of kindness. Each year on February 17th, National Random Acts of Kindness Day grows in popularity.

At Port Douglas State School the ‘Make A Positive Difference’ team spread cheer and kindness to students and staff last week.

Various stations were set up for students to participate in. While many enjoyed the compliment station, others wrote positive chalk messages or created cards for special people.

There was even a selfie station where friends could gather and show appreciation of each other.

According to Principal Doug Barnes these random acts of kindness are “aimed to brighten students’ day, today and every day”.

MEANTIME IN OTHER SCHOOL NEWS…

MOSSMAN HIGH STUDENTS FACE FEARS

Starting on a literal ‘high’ , students travelled to Holloways Beach for a new program called ‘On Trek’ to face their fears on the high ropes course.

On Trek is a joint program between the school and the Department of Education to build on the students’ confidence, trust, teamwork and empowerment.

Other activities planned include volunteering in the community and pool sessions where students will work on basic water rescue and first aid.

Principal Annie Murrie said: “We are already feeling a sense of fellowship amongst the group and we look forward to more adventures together”.

SHROVE TUESDAY AT ST AUGUSTINE’S PRIMARY

Being a Catholic school, St Augustine’s marked the beginning of Lent this week with Shrove Tuesday.

Richelle Woods from St Augustine's explained that Shrove Tuesday was traditionally a time where people got rid of all the 'luxury' items out of their pantry to begin fasting for Lent.

“Luxury items back in history included things like eggs, flour and butter,” she said. “Our Saints students were given a pikelet as a symbol of the beginning of Lent.”

At our Douglas Shire schools there is always something happening. Each week Newsport sums up the events, achievements and news from the schools that make our region great. If you would like to be included in the weekly wrap-ups please contact [email protected].
