Douglas Shire schools to enjoy upgraded tuckshops, playgrounds

Local students will be eating and playing in style in the future after two Douglas Shire schools gained funds to upgrade their local tuckshops and playgrounds.

As part of the State Government’s Eat Right, Play Right, Learn Well program Mossman State School and Wonga Beach State School each secured funds to have their playgrounds and tuckshop facilities refurbished and spruced up, which can only be a massive boost to both education facilities in the long term.

The scheme aims to assist high priority, disadvantaged schools and communities.

The two schools might use the funds to provide surface repairs to update soft fall areas (both new and upgraded) or to upgrade shade cover structures over play areas.

Meantime tuckshop improvements might centre around purchasing new or refurbished catering appliances and equipment, updating stainless steel benches or potentially improving commercial sinks and tapware.

“It is fantastic to see schools right across the Far North benefit from this popular program,” Cook MP Cynthia Lui said.

“We know how important playgrounds and tuckshops are to school life, and this funding is sure to have a positive impact on these school communities.

“If you add together the 16 schools successful in this round and the 18 schools that benefited from the initial $20 million, almost $9.8 million is being invested to upgrade playgrounds and tuckshops in the Far North alone.”

Fundamentally the program aims to help more school communities promote healthy behaviours that support learning and get kids moving, starting with the fundamentals of healthy eating and play.
