A church service at St Marys By The Sea in Port Douglas to honour police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty was well attended on Thursday.

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr, representatives of the CWA and RSL, members of the public and a retired police officer from Victoria were among those who joined local police officers and their family members from Port Douglas and Mossman stations for the Police Remembrance Day service.

Local state Fire and Emergency and Ambulance Service officers also attended.

Lines from the Remembrance Day booklet were read during the service:

“Today, we remember and acknowledge the sacrifice of those officers who committed their lives to the safety and security of others.

“In recognition of those officers, we affirm our commitment to the principles of law enforcement - to serve with honour, courage, compassion, integrity and honesty, in the quest to secure a safe environment for all our communities.”

After the Thursday 10am service, morning tea was provided by the CWA Port Douglas.

Queensland Police Legacy Scheme

The Queensland Police Legacy Scheme, formed in 1971, provides assistance to the spouse and dependent children of deceased Queensland Police Officers who have died either from natural causes or from injuries received in the execution of their duties.

The Scheme is administered by a Board which considers any urgent financial needs of a family on the death of a Police Officer (including retired officers). All educational expenses including, fees, uniforms, books, and other requirements through to university level are considered for payment on recommendations to the Board.

The Scheme also provides an annual holiday for Legacy families as well as other activities including fishing trips, picnics, visits to entertainment centres and seasonal functions. It operates primarily from funds voluntarily contributed by serving and retired members of the Queensland Police Service.

Donations to the Scheme are also gratefully accepted from police sporting bodies, business organisations and private citizens, including offerings made at National Police Remembrance Day Services.
