At our Douglas Shire schools there is always something happening. Each week Newsport sums up the events, achievements and news from the schools that make our region great.

Final leg for Year 12’s at Mossman State High School

Tensions were high last Monday as the Year 12 students kicked off their final exams which will run over a three week period.

Mossman High School started with their largest group, 42 students, for the exam block with English. Pens were furiously writing about Shakespeare’s Macbeth for over 2 hours.

Since then, the school’s Year 12 students have cycled through Maths, Music, Legal Studies, Geography, Philosophy and Reason, Chemistry, Physical Education, Biology, Digital Solutions, Ancient History, Film TV and New Media and Psychology.

The final few days will see them tackling Business and Physics.

Mrs Belinda Guthrie, Acting Deputy Principal, wishes the Year 12 students all the very best with the last few days of their exam block and feels confident that they will be able to perform well to cap off their 13 years of schooling with great success.

St Augustine’s Primary School Camps Out

New friends were made last Friday as Prep students and their families came together with their Year 6 buddies for a ‘Camp Out’.

Tents were set up, games were played, the sausage BBQ was cooking, a disco was happening and s’more were being toasted.

Richelle Woods from St Augustine’s Primary said the school is very grateful that families were able to come together as a community once again.

Over $3000 raised at Wonga Beach State School

This week is all about the efforts of the school’s 2022 Student Leaders.

Last Monday the leaders attended the Tinaroo Environmental Education Centre as an end of year celebration of their leadership journeys throughout 2022.

Their 2022 efforts included many fundraisers such as selling icy poles, recycling poppers, discos, free dress up days and fun games days.

These efforts have seen them raise over $3000 for the year which will leave the 2023 Student Council in a good place to pay for next year's seniors' shirts and graduation meals.

The students not only raised money for their peers and their school, but also for various charities.

They hosted a 'McGrath Foundation' cricket afternoon, sold yellow cupcakes for Daffodil Day and they raised $110 to donate to their Year 5 peer Alvie, who was participating in the 'Project Ponytail' fundraiser in support of the Cancer Council.

Water fun and a musical day at Miallo State School

Junior students got to play a range of water games and relays before their freestyle swim in the big pool at the school’s Swimming Carnival.

Seniors swam 25 metres in all strokes and ended with team relays with ’Gold House’ taking home the trophy this year.

Last week the school was also lucky enough to be visited by the Mossman SHS Band for a whole-school performance.

The school’s Principal, Anet Ridley, said: “It was fantastic to hear the range of songs and seeing so many ex-Miallo students playing in the band.”

Miallo State School was also visited by the Box Jelly Theatre Company who put on a performance for the older students called ‘The Boy with the Longest Shadow’.

The play included some powerful messages about being yourself, positivity and dealing with anxiety.

Afterwards, the younger students participated in a drama workshop with two actors from the company.

Theatre director Rachel Terry said that the younger students were creative, collaborative and exceptionally behaved while our older students had impeccable manners and asked insightful questions.

Next year, Box Jelly Theatre Company will be coming to Miallo for a 4-day Artist in Residence program.

Mossman State School students fly to the Goldie

Year 6 students from Mossman State School have had a fantastic time at Tallebudgera Camp down at the Gold Coast this week.

Head of Teaching and Learning, Sharon Case, said it was a sensational experience for the kids, many of whom had never even been on a plane before.

The students also had a big day at Movie World and afterwards the school’s Principal received a special email from a random stranger who had seen the group passing by and thought that the behaviour and manners of the students was remarkable.
