"Gymnastics provides a foundation for any sport and offers many wonderful social and physical benefits to the hundreds of students that walk through our doors each week”, club manager Hayley Bender said.

From flying in the air to enhancing your flexibility and learning real warrior skills, Mossman Gymnastics has everything in store for you.

With a range of thirty-eight different and unique classes spanning recreational gymnastics, Aerial Silks and even FreeG Ninja & Warrior classes, the club has put themselves in a popular position in the Douglas area.

However, according to club manager Hayley Bender, the club is much more than just their classes on offer.

“Gymnastics provides a foundation for any sport and offers many wonderful social and physical benefits to the hundreds of students that walk through our doors each week”, she said.

With over 240 members, the club has students of all ages and is one of the largest non-profit sporting clubs in the Shire.

“We are proud to promote a strong, community-minded and positive club culture”, Ms Bender said. “This is shown through our programs and services, such as birthday parties, family fun days, come and try sessions, school and kindy programs, displays and participation in many Shire events including Carnivale, Mossman Street Parade, Child Protection week and so much more.

“We have been honoured to receive the Gymnastics QLD Small Club Promotion and Community Engagement Award twice now.”

Spiralling through the air

A new and very special addition to the classes on offer is Aerial Silks. Ms Bender explained that Aerial Silks uses two lengths of fabric rigged to the ceiling. “Students perform aerial acrobatics while hanging in the Silks”, she said.

“These classes, for all fitness levels, teach amazing skills while building strength and improving fitness. Students drop, swing and spiral their way through this amazing class full of fun and creativity, starting from the ground and working their way up.

“At this stage, we have Silks classes for primary and secondary students, as well as adults. In time, we’d love to expand this target market further, or add elements like Aerial Hoops.”

Be a ninja

Following the popular modern trend in tricking, parkour and freestyle activities, FreeG & Warrior is one of the club’s most exciting and popular programs.“FreeG blends acrobatic tricks and traditional gymnastics and gives participants the opportunity to partake in adrenaline fuelled freestyle sports in a safe, indoors environment”, Ms Bender said.

Gymnastics Clinic

Recently Mossman Gymnastics hosted Gymnastics Queensland’s 2022 FNQ Junior Regional Development Clinic.

According to Ms Bender, it was the first time the club hosted this clinic. “The clinic was an opportunity for coaches in our FNQ region to come together, get inspired, learn and refresh some great skills, drills and information for our Junior programs.”

For the upcoming year, Ms Bender said the club has a lot of fun and exciting things planned. “Some of our popular community fundraisers will return, we will be raising money for a new sprung floor and we will prepare our gymnasts for the Gymnastics QLD Junior State Championships.”
