125 Birthday candles to mark Mossman State School milestone

125 is a great number of candles on a birthday cake but it is a milestone to be greatly celebrated.

Next year Mossman State School will be marking this birthday after opening in 1898 and having built a rich educational history.

A testament to the reputation of the school can be shown with the fourth generation of families attending the school as well as teachers who were students at the school.

With students coming from areas including Julatten, Mossman Gorge, Mossman township, Cooya Beach, Newell Beach, Wonga Beach and Port Douglas the school motto is 'Forever onwards' with a commitment to ensuring that every child is a lifelong learner.

A school that values more than what is taught within the walls of the classroom but also the importance of extra-curricular activities, included as part of that weekly timetable, such as a before school reading club, instrumental music, gifted and talented programs, health and physical education, sporting activities, music, and foundational learning programs.

Throughout the year students participate in events that showcase their talents as well as being an integral part of the Douglas Shire community including the Port Douglas Carnivale Street parade, Reef guardian projects, cultural programs, ANZAC Day march, and various other student council initiatives.

To celebrate the birthday the Parents and Citizens association is putting the callout to anybody interested or know of anyone who is a past student or who has been associated with the school, past or present, to come together and form a steering committee to plan the celebrations worthy of the 125th Birthday!

P&C President, Tilly Melchert, told Newsport how she had become involved with the school, why these celebrations are so important and how Mossman State School was all about family.

“I have worked at the school as a teacher for the past 6 years. When I first started, I fell in love with our school, the community feel of it, the students, the families and our hardworking staff,” Ms Melchert said.

“The school itself has come so far and has achieved so much over the last 10 years and I feel privileged to have watched it grow and flourish.

“I was then, naturally very excited when our son started school last year. So my husband, currently our P&C treasurer, and I became MSS parents and we wanted to see MSS continue to thrive so we decided to get involved with the P&C.

“I really encourage anyone in the local community, not only parents, to get involved with their school’s P&C. They provide so much for our local children and it ‘takes a village’ after all.

“The celebration next year is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate how far MSS has come. We hope we can come together to create something amazing for our school community, past and present.”

A meeting will be held next week on the 28th of July 2022 at 3:30pm in the school’s Resource Building.
