Port Douglas’ own U14 (under 14 year-old) boys basketball team recently achieved an outstanding performance at the Top Of The North Small Clubs Tournament in Cairns.

On December 11 of last year, the Douglas Heat Basketball club attended the tournament at the Cairns Basketball Stadium with three representative teams: U12 Boys, U14 Boys and U16 Girls.

Steve Hull, president of the club and coach of the U14 boys team, said that the U14 Boys were the standout team winning all three of their games fairly convincingly.

“The boys made a great effort beating Mission Beach with 71-17, Mareeba with 74-23 and Cairns with 59-39”, Mr Hull said.

“Douglas Heat U16 girls played 2 games on the day, beaten by Cairns in game 1, then having a good win against Mareeba in game 2. The U12 Boys lost both their games against Cairns teams but fought hard all day”, he said.

He adds that the Cairns teams are made of players from their Emerging Program, not their representative program.

The U14 boys team

Mr Hull said that the U14 boys team had a few training sessions leading up to the tournament.

“The boys trained hard and listened well. On the day of the tournament the boys played a really strong defence, allowing them to get out and run teams off the court.

“These boys have been at Douglas Heat since they were little kids, coming through our Aussie Hoops program, the U10’s.

“The Aussie Hoops program is a national program designed specifically for 5-10-year-olds learning to play basketball”, Mr Hull explained.

The Club

Mr Hull said that Douglas Heat Basketball is a Basketball Queensland affiliated club.

“We run the national Aussie Hoops program for 5-10 year olds, under 12s and under 15 competitions and an adults competition.

“This year we hope to expand our representative program. On the local scene we will be running Aussie Hoops U10, U13 mixed, U16 mixed and open mens.

“The club’s ethos revolves around giving everyone equal opportunity to play amateur and social basketball in a safe and fun environment, with the opportunity to follow pathways to higher standards of competition”, Mr Hull said.

“We are always looking for new volunteers, so come along and join the fun!”
