Despite the threat of rain, thousands from across the region and beyond converged on Port Douglas over the weekend for the Carnivale 2021 festivities.

From gourmet food events to the Property Shop Macrossan Street Parade, Four Mile Family Beach Day and Plantation Picnic in the Park, Carnivale went off with a bang.

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said it was a sold-out weekend for all ticketed events with fantastic crowds out and about enjoying the Carnivale program from Friday through to Sunday.

He said setting the tone for the weekend was the Street Parade, which saw a huge swell of people line the street to watch the progression of floats.

“The parade was just fantastic, the community really got behind this event and the effort the participants went to with the costuming, music and decorations was just outstanding. Congratulations to everyone that took part, it was such a wonderful night,” he added.

Taking out best overall float was Port Douglas State School, best business float went to The Wildlife Habitat, best community float went to Mossman Hospital Friends of the Foundation and best individual went to Sweet K.

Adding to the atmosphere was Quicksilver Race Week, with around 30 sail boats racing just off Four Mile Beach throughout the weekend.

At the Longest Lunch, 240 guests took in the breathtaking views at Rex Smeal Park while being served four courses with matching wines.

On Saturday, it was down to the beach for lots of live entertainment, the annual sandcastle building competition, skydiving demonstration and samba in the sand. New event Dogs Day Out, which was raising money for Paws & Claws, also added to the atmosphere

It was then back to Rex Smeal Park where Spiderbait rocked on with more than 1000 people for 90 minutes with some crowd favourites – Black Betty and Buy Me A Pony.

The Wonderland Spiegeltent’s season of performances including Popcorn Underground, Blunderland and the Greatest Magic Show were all sold out.

Capping off the weekend was the Plantation Picnic in the Park, presented by Plantation Resort and Rockin’ Rick Entertainment.

“What a fantastic way to end the weekend with this new free community event celebrating our local musicians,” Mayor Kerr added.
